You don’t have to clean your house from floor to ceiling every single day to maintain your space, but you do need to stay on top of certain tasks to help you keep your home clean.

If you’re not sure where to begin, you might want to heed some advice from the lifestyle expert herself: Martha Stewart. In her book, Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook, she suggests six simple daily steps to keeping your house clean and pristine.

1. Make Your Bed
Easy enough. Making your bed everyday keeps your bedroom looking organized, and it only takes a few minutes each morning to accomplish. When it’s time to crawl in at night, you’ll be so happy getting into a bed without tangled, messy sheets and blankets.

2. Clear Out Clutter
If something is out of place, put it back where it belongs. Take five minutes each day to put your possessions back in their rightful spot. And don’t be afraid to purge items you haven’t been using on the regular.

3. Sort The Mail
You likely get mail everyday, so instead of letting it pile up on a table, open it, and place it into an appropriate organized folder so you don’t lose track of it.

4. Clean As You Go
Don’t let those dishes pile up all day. Once you’ve finished making lunch, clean up after yourself so you don’t have a huge mess come dinner.

5. Instantly Wipe Up Spills

Same goes for the kitchen counter or dining room floors. Clean up spills instantly so they don’t stain and are easier to wipe.

6. Sweep
Don’t let dirt and debris gather on the kitchen floor: Take those few extra minutes and do a little sweep each day. You’ll thank yourself later!
